Urgent need for OSCE summit on Ukraine

2.3.2014

Following the rapid escalation of the situation in Ukraine and the decision by the Russian Council of the Federation to clear the way for a military intervention, MEP Tarja Cronberg states:

“An OSCE conference must be convened urgently to prevent further escalation of the dangerous situation in Ukraine. Shared diplomatic effort is needed more than ever. Further escalation of the conflict is detrimental to the interests of Russia, Ukraine and Europe, and will have destabilising long-term implications for the entire world.”

“As a participating member, Finland should immediately submit a request to the OSCE to call for an urgent OSCE conference. The OSCE is the only pan-European organization where all parties in the current conflict have an equal seat. The EU must continue to strive for a peaceful and inclusive solution to the political and economic crisis in Ukraine. The solution must be based on democracy, rule of law, respect for human rights, and the sovereignty of Ukraine.”

“A high-level OSCE contact group needs to be in the Crimea to start talks on the ground with the regional authorities and prevent any military operations. The EU needs to call for an extraordinary Russia-EU summit in order to use the diplomatic channels to the fullest.”

MEP Tarja Cronberg is a member of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, its Subcommittee on Security and Defence and the Russia delegation
