OSCE involvement in the Ukraine crisis essential for successful de-escalation
Following the still strained situation in Ukraine, MEP Tarja Cronberg states:
'As the situation in Ukraine remains tense particularly in Sevastopol where Russia’s navy base is stationed, it is essential that the OSCE step in to coordinate and build trust between all international actors involved in Ukraine’s crisis.'
'I welcome the appointment of the OSCE special envoy, the Swiss Ambassador Tim Guldimann yesterday, as well as the proposal to establish the International Contact Group under the auspices of the OSCE.'
'The OSCE is designed to provide platform for multilateral diplomacy and consultations for difficult situations, such as the one in Ukraine now, and it should rapidly take up consultations with Ukraine’s new leaders, Russia, the EU, and the US.'
'Respect for human rights is essential for Ukraine’s government after Yanukovitch. The new leaders should invite OSCE to send a Human Rights Assessment Mission to Ukraine.'
MEP Tarja Cronberg is a member of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee and its subcommittee on Security and Defence, and Chair of the Iran delegation
