A Permanent European Moderator to Ukraine22.2.2014
Following the continued crisis in Ukraine MEP Tarja Cronberg states:
'I am very concerned with the deep crisis of legitimacy in Ukraine. There is a risk of a total collapse of the state.'
'I hope that today's emergency elections of Oleksandr Turchinov as the speaker of the parliament, the Verhovna Rada, will help to restore the constitutional order in Ukraine and move forward towards swiftly holding early parliamentary and presidential elections, which need to be free and fair.'
'The deal brokered by the three EU ministers on 20.02 helped to stop the street violence. Unfortunately it did not become a lasting solution to Ukraine's crisis of power. There is a dire need for a permanent high-level European diplomatic moderator, who would be present in Ukraine until the elections are held. This moderator should engage actively with all the parties to the crisis as well as have the highest international backing of the EU and the OSCE.'
'The EU needs to reach out to towards Ukraine's fragmented society by putting more focus on the Eastern regions and the Crimea, providing all assistance necessary for a constructive way out of the impasse.'
MEP Tarja Cronberg is a member of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee and its subcommittee on Security and Defence, and Chair of the Iran delegation
